Whoa, makin’ records.
So I’ve been spending the last few weeks assisting on a location recording with a good friend of mine. It’s really an interesting job trying to figure out exactly what you need in order to accomplish whatever it is you set out to.
We were looking to end up with a finished record, but with the location and vibe intact. This record was much more about the music and the interaction between musicians on the recording floor than it was about technicalities or editing. That being said, it still needed to come out at major label quality, which was a fantastic challenge both philosophically and technically. We essentially installed a studio in an outbuilding and ran lines into the main recording space, which had a fantastic reverb and feel to it.
32 in, 24 out, 1 stereo headphone cue, 4 mono added. for a bit of flexibility on the floor. Pro Tools HD, Yamaha DM2000. Most of the time there was at least 8 people playing on the floor at one time, often more.
We took an IR of the room for future use, I had a lot of fun, learned a ton about putting together a useful, flexible and reliable system, and still can’t believe I make records for a living.
